Not too long ago, someone posted a question on the Community Theater Resources Facebook page. They asked “Why is Sound Equipment So Confusing.” It’s a valid question, that got all kinds of answers. Some good. Some really bad!
The short answer to the question is that sound and sound equipment is confusing because it is VERY complex. Look at it this way. If you have a building, and need to replace the HVAC system, you have a million options. You can go buy a window unit. You can go hire an HAVAC company to design and install a system for you. Or, if your facility is of a certain size, you might need to hire a mechanical engineer to do the design. Sound is no different. It is very much dependent upon your room (or in your case what you expect the portable system to be able to accomplish) and it’s very dependent on the content you are trying to amplify. Very rarely is it a “DIY” kind of project.
One other BIG caveat. Be VERY wary of anyone who has a recommendation for specific equipment if they haven’t been in your room, taken measurements, and talked with you about what you’re trying to do.
Buying a sound system is usually a once in a decade purchase. So, you want to make good decisions that will give you the best value for the money, and will be as future proof as possible.
So, let’s talk process. The first thing you need to do is find someone who is a trusted expert. That means someone who is IN THE INDUSTRY in some way. Very few ‘volunteers’ have the knowledge and skills to help you be successful in getting a new system. This might be a local sound company. It might be an individual who has done system specification and design in the past. The important thing is that they understand what it is you want to do… and know the specifics of your situation.
Can you use an online company (or Amazon)? Sure… but you’ll need someone to vet their recommendations. Remember: online retailers are RETAILERS. They have incentive to move gear, and really don’t care if you ever come back. They have no local ties, so they may not feel a responsibility to put your needs above their financial gain! So… find someone who you trust.
Second, you need to have a conversation about what you want to get done. What exactly is the outcome desired. This is the most important step. Once you do that, your trusted expert can work with to put together a plan that balances your budget, your needs, and the gives you the best value in the long term. Your needs may be simple, or very complex. Either way, the key is to find that trusted expert who can help make sure your requirements and expectations are met for the lowest investment possible.
